Super Eagles captain William Ekong has emphasized the team’s focus on securing a crucial win in their 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe. Ahead of Tuesday’s encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Ekong stated that the team is determined to collect three points, which will push them to nine points and keep them in the race for a World Cup spot.
Ekong highlighted that the Super Eagles aim to control the match, similar to their dominant performance in Kigali against Rwanda last Friday. He told the press that the team’s primary goal is to work hard for the goals needed to secure the victory and solidify their position as a contender for a World Cup ticket.
“The three points are crucial for us. At this stage, we can’t afford to drop any more points. Our goal is to take it one match at a time, gather three points here and there, and hope that will be enough to secure our ticket,” Ekong said.
Nigeria’s road to qualification had been difficult, as they had failed to win any of their first four games in the series, leaving them in fifth place in Group C. However, their 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali has breathed new life into their campaign, moving them to fourth place with six points.
Zimbabwe, currently bottom of the table with three points, will be looking to improve their position when they face Nigeria. The Warriors arrived in Uyo on Friday afternoon, just an hour after the Super Eagles’ arrival from Kigali. Both teams have been training at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium ahead of the match.
The match will be officiated by Eritrean referee Teklu Mogos Tsegay, as appointed by FIFA.
With a strong focus on securing all three points, the Super Eagles are determined to remain in the race for World Cup qualification, with Ekong and his teammates hoping for another solid performance to boost their chances.
