Investigators have uncovered the bodies of 28 migrants near a detention facility in the southern Libyan desert. The Libyan Attorney General’s Office reported the discovery of the mass grave north of Kufra, where numerous migrants had been held.
In a statement released on Sunday, the authorities revealed that 76 migrants were rescued from the facility.
It is believed that a criminal gang had unlawfully detained the migrants, subjected them to torture, and inflicted cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatment upon them. Kufra, located in southern Libya near the borders with Egypt and Sudan, is part of a desert region with a volatile security environment, further complicated by years of civil conflict in Libya.
Armed groups, some collaborating with state entities, have created criminal networks that exploit migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
These groups are involved in a range of human rights abuses, including unlawful killings, forced labor, forced recruitment, and trafficking for sexual exploitation.
