Tinubu Writes Reps To Amend Police Act, IGP Tenure

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday forwarded the Police Act Amendment Bill to the House of Representatives.

The bill aims to modify the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) term of office.

The police refuted reports earlier in July that IGP Kayode Egbetokun attempted to influence the National Assembly on a measure aiming at raising the officer retirement age.

The President appointed Egbetokun as the IGP in June 2023 for four years. He was appointed alongside four new service chiefs.

According to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, who was born on September 4, 1964, is expected to retire in September 2024, when he will be 60 years old.

By September, he would have served for just one year and three months out of his four-year appointment, leaving him with two years and nine months yet to go.

The present head of police was not the source of the issue surrounding the term of the Inspector General of Police. It was exactly the same as that of Usman Baba, Egbetokun’s predecessor.

Baba reached the required 35 years of service in March 2023, when he became 60, but he stayed in office until Tinubu named Egbetokun as his successor three months later.
