A devastating multiple-vehicle crash in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State has left six people dead and five others injured, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed on Tuesday.
The harrowing incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday night in the Okenkwe community and involved seven vehicles, including two tricycles, three cars, and two heavy-duty trucks.
Acting Sector Commander of the FRSC in Kogi, Samuel Ogundayo, described the accident as “tragic and deeply unfortunate.”
According to the commander, the crash was triggered when a truck ascending the Okengwe hill reportedly lost its brakes and rolled backward, colliding violently with vehicles behind it.
“The truck, unable to complete its climb, lost control and reversed downhill, crushing two tricycles, ramming into three cars, and colliding with another truck. The result was catastrophic,” Ogundayo told journalists in Lokoja.
Emergency response teams from the FRSC arrived at the scene promptly and carried out a coordinated rescue effort. The injured victims were immediately transported to the Referral Hospital in Okene for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Onene General Hospital Mortuary.
The crash caused a severe gridlock on the busy route, which was only cleared after a collaborative effort involving the FRSC and other security agencies.
In the wake of the incident, Ogundayo issued a strong advisory to motorists, especially those navigating hilly terrains.
“Drivers must always maintain a safe distance from heavy-duty vehicles, particularly in high-incline areas. Brake failure can happen in seconds, and a little caution can save lives,” he said.
He further urged road users to strictly adhere to all traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies and reduce the alarming rate of road accidents in the country.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to road safety and called on all stakeholders—including commercial transport operators, private drivers, and logistics companies—to prioritize vehicle maintenance and responsible driving practices.
