Bago Suspends Okada, Keke Night Operations Amid Security Concerns

Governor Umaru Bago orders 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. restriction, vows crackdown on criminal hideouts and illicit drug hubs in Minna

In a bid to stem the tide of insecurity in Minna, the capital of Niger State, Governor Umaru Bago has ordered the suspension of commercial motorcycle (okada) and tricycle (keke) operations between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily.

The directive was issued during a high-level stakeholders’ security meeting held at the Government House in Minna, which brought together traditional leaders from the Minna Emirate and heads of security agencies across the state.

Describing the move as a “temporary but necessary” action, the governor said the measure was aimed at addressing the recent spike in criminal activities within the city. He emphasized that while medical emergencies would be exempted, the restriction would be enforced without compromise.

“I will not fold my arms and watch criminals continue to wreak havoc,” Bago said. “It is the fundamental responsibility of government to protect the lives and property of its citizens.”

The governor instructed district, village, and ward heads to begin full documentation of residents in their communities. He warned that any building found to be harbouring criminals would be demolished, and structures being used for the sale or distribution of illicit drugs would face the same fate.

Bago also directed law enforcement agencies to intensify raids on identified criminal enclaves and dismantle networks threatening the peace of the capital.

He cautioned parents to monitor their children closely, warning that anyone involved in criminal or violent activity would be arrested and prosecuted. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on thuggery and public disorder.

“Governance is a collective responsibility,” Bago stated. “We must all join hands to ensure that peace and security prevail in our communities.”

In attendance at the security meeting were the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba; the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruk Bahago; traditional rulers, and senior security officials.
