Lagos state govt demolishes shops under high-tension cables, shuts Ikorodu market

The Lagos State Government has launched a crackdown illegal shops built directly under high-tension cables at Adamo Market, Ikorodu.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who made this known in a statement on Thursday, explained that the removal of the shops is in line with the government’s mandate to ensure the safety of lives and adherence to environmental laws.

According to the commissioner, these structures, built directly under high-tension cables, not only violate the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, but also pose a grave threat to the safety of market traders and the surrounding community.

“Due to the scale of infractions discovered during our inspection, we have ordered the immediate closure of the market until further notice,” the commissioner wrote on X.

“Our goal is not just enforcement, but the protection of all residents.

He further urged market leaders and traders across Lagos to avoid illegal constructions and respect environmental guidelines. Safety and sustainability remain non-negotiable.
