AC Milan pay tribute to ‘unforgettable’ ex-owner Berlusconi
Football club AC Milan has paid tribute to their former owner Silvio Berlusconi, who has died at the age of 86.
The Italian media tycoon passed away on Monday after suffering from leukemia.
Milan had won a number of trophies under Berlusconi and achieved unparalleled heights during his ownership.
The Milan-born former Italian prime minister saved the club from near-bankruptcy when he bought it in 1986.
During his time from 1986-2017, AC Milan won a whopping 29 trophies, which included five Champions League titles and eight Serie A titles.
“Thank you, Mr President. Always with us,” the club said in a statement, adding it was “grieving the passing of the unforgettable Silvio Berlusconi”.
“Tomorrow, we will dream of new ambitions, create new challenges, and seek new victories. Which will represent the good, the strong, and the true that lies inside us, in all of us who shared this adventure of binding our lives to a dream called Milan,” the statement continued.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who won two Champions League titles as an AC Milan player in 1989 and 1990, wrote on Twitter, “Today’s sadness doesn’t erase the happy moments spent together.”
Berlusconi ran the Serie A giants from 1986 to 2017 before selling to a Chinese investment management company.
