The United States Coast Guard has disclosed it has recovered “presumed human remains” from the wreckage of the Titan submersible.
On June 18, 2023, the submersible operated by American tourism and expeditions company OceanGate, imploded during its descent in the North Atlantic Ocean, while on a voyage to the wreck of the Titanic, killing all five people on board.
The remains were recovered by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that was searching the ocean floor about 700 kilometers south of Newfoundland, Canada and will be transported to the United States for further analysis.
The Coast Guard said that it is working with the families of the victims to identify the remains.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard says investigatiions are still ongoing to acsertain the cause of the Titan’s implosion. However, officials have said that they believe it was caused by a rapid decompression of the sub’s cabin.
The Titan was a privately owned submersible that was designed to carry up to six passengers. It was equipped with a variety of safety features, including a redundant life support system and an escape hatch.
The Coast Guard said that it is grateful for the “coordinated international and inter-agency support” that helped recover the Titan’s wreckage and the presumed human remains, adding that it will provide updates as they become available.
The implosion of the Titan is a reminder of the dangers of underwater exploration.
