
Tragedy struck on Sunday as an accident involving a commercial bus with the number plate MUS 753 YD resulted in the loss of three lives. The vehicle caught fire along the Lekki expressway in Lagos State.
Providing details of the heartbreaking incident, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency released a statement on its Facebook page on Sunday.
It was reported that the bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the nearest morgue.
The statement revealed, “The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, swiftly deployed its Response Team to the scene of a car accident on Sunday, 12th November 2023, at Sandfill Bus-stop, heading towards Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island.
“Upon reaching the scene, it was evident that a commercial bus with the registration number, MUS 753 YD, was engulfed in flames. Further investigation showed that the bus caught fire due to reckless driving.
“Unfortunately, the three passengers trapped inside the bus perished in the flames. Their remains were properly bagged and handed over to SEHMU for immediate transportation to the morgue. The bus was recovered from the road and moved to Maroko Police Station.”
LASEMA’s boss, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed deep concern about the prevalence of reckless driving on Lagos roads and urged drivers to exercise caution and abstain from drinking while driving.
“Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and emphasized the need for motorists to drive with care and avoid speeding.
“He also expressed dismay at the reckless habits of some commercial drivers who consume alcohol while driving. As a result, he advised everyone to drive responsibly, ensure their vehicles are in good condition before any journey, in order to prevent the loss of lives and properties associated with this menace,” the statement concluded.
