Nigerians Vexed as Grammy Plays Fela Kuti’s “Water No Get Enemy” While Announcing Tyla’s ‘Water’ As Winner
The late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s song “Water No Get Enemy” was played at the 66th Grammy Awards, before Tyla, a South African singer, was declared the winner of the inaugural Best African Music Performance category with her song titled “Water”.
Tyla won the category after surpassing tracks by Nigerian artists such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
To many people’s amazement, Fela’s ageless masterpiece, “Water No Get Enemy,” was played after the announcement in place of Tyla’s midtempo, sexual undertone song.
This has stirred reactions online as seen below;
Adepromise said: “Abi Tyla submitted Fela Water to Win Grammy. We need to do our investigation.”
Mayo6Tee reacted: “They Submitted which Water lol .. @RecordingAcad you’ve done it again.”
