Senate Calls for Investigation into Helicopter Crash pays tribute to Wigwe and Others

 

 

The Nigerian Senate has called for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings, his wife Doreen, son Chizzi, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group.

The incident, which occurred in the United States of America last Friday, has prompted senators to urge the federal government to collaborate with US authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.

 

During a session on Wednesday, February 14, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honor of Herbert Wigwe, recognizing his significant contributions to the business and philanthropic communities.

Senator Allwell Onyesoh of Rivers State moved a motion of urgent public importance, urging his colleagues to celebrate Wigwe’s exemplary character and achievements.

 

Various senators paid tribute to Wigwe, highlighting his professionalism and generosity.

Senator Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto South described Wigwe as a “pan-Nigerian” and praised his financial acumen. Tambuwal shared personal anecdotes, recalling Wigwe’s acts of kindness, such as sponsoring his relatives’ pilgrimage to Hajj.

 

Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel, emphasized the irreplaceable loss Nigeria has suffered with Wigwe’s passing. He also mourned the death of Abimbola Ogunbanjo, underscoring the magnitude of the tragedy.

 

Senator Tokunbo Abiru, chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, echoed sentiments of admiration for Wigwe and Ogunbanjo, hailing them as brilliant professionals.

 

Senator Ahmed Wadada, chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, highlighted Wigwe’s broader impact beyond the banking sector, citing his ventures into various areas to enhance societal value.

 

Senate President Godswill Akpabio paid tribute to Wigwe as a “pan-Africanist” who elevated Access Bank’s presence beyond Nigeria. He expressed condolences for the loss of Wigwe, his family members, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, emphasizing their enduring legacies.

 

As the nation mourns the untimely demise of these esteemed individuals, the Senate’s call for a thorough investigation underscores the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic helicopter crash.
