The Nigerian House of Representatives has issued a call for President Bola Tinubu to conduct a comprehensive review of several government reports, including the 2012 Orosanye Report and subsequent reviews, in alignment with current realities.
Additionally, the House urged the Executive Arm of Government to develop and implement policies aimed at repositioning key sectors such as agriculture, solid minerals, and the informal economy to mitigate potential layoffs and spur economic growth.
These resolutions were reached following a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Kama Nkemkanma, Hon. Olumide Osoba, and Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi during a plenary session in Abuja.
Nkemkanma highlighted concerns regarding the outdated nature of the Orosanye Report and subsequent government actions, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive review to address current challenges.
He noted that the recommendations made in 2012 may not adequately reflect the dynamic nature of society, the economy, and governance, potentially leading to unintended consequences if fully implemented.
The motion outlined the history of the Orosanye Report, detailing its recommendations for the rationalization and restructuring of federal government parastatals, commissions, and agencies.
Despite the potential cost-saving benefits outlined in the report, subsequent White Paper committees appointed by the Jonathan administration rejected many of the recommendations, leading to a lack of implementation.
In response to the perceived shortcomings of previous reviews, the Buhari administration inaugurated additional committees chaired by Goni Aji and Ama Pepple to reassess the Orosanye Report and review agencies created between 2014 and 2021.
Subsequently, another committee chaired by Ebele Okeke was tasked with producing a white paper on the reports.
The House emphasized its commitment to supporting policies that prioritize the security and welfare of citizens, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
Recognizing the importance of aligning government actions with current realities, the House called for implementable alternatives that minimize unintended consequences and promote positive outcomes for the nation.
