In a Brazilian doping case, Gabriel “Gabigol” Barbosa was sentenced to two years in prison for “attempted fraud.”
According to Football Italia, on April 8, 2023, Gabigol was found guilty of trying to rig the drug test at the Flamengo training camp.
Gabigol was accused of “obstructing” the personnel conducting the drug tests, despite the fact that all of his teammates had finished them before their 10am session.
He failed to comply with the procedures, went for lunch instead, handed over the vessel of the urine sample open and then told officials this would be his ‘final’ doping test.
The ban will run till April 2025, as it runs for two years from the date of the incident.
The 27-year-old made the much-publicised transfer from Santos to Inter in the summer of 2016 for €29.5m.
He made very little impact, scoring one goal in 10 appearances and being named Worst Player in Serie A.
He went on loan to Benfica, Santos and Flamengo before the sale to the latter in January 2020 for €17.5m.
Gabigol was part of the Brazil squad that won gold in the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic games.
