Omobayo Godwins Inaugurated as Edo Deputy Governor

Omobayo Godwins has been inaugurated as the Deputy Governor of Edo state, hours after Philip Shaibu was impeached by the state house of assembly.

The 37-year-old was sworn in around 1:40 pm on Monday by the Chief Judge of Edo State Justice Daniel Okungbowa.

The inauguration of Omobayo in the Edo State Government House in Benin City represents a significant turning point in the political history of the state, after the day that saw the impeachment of Shaibu as the state’s deputy governor.

An exuberant Omobayo, resplendent in a white kaftan and matching red traditional cap, was met by a boisterous mob in one of the Government House’s hallways following his oath of office.

There were many well-wishers, sympathizers, and prominent Edo State figures present at the ceremony.

Following Shaibu’s impeachment for disclosing classified state information, he was sworn in shortly after, putting an end to months of power struggles between him and Governor Obaseki about the former’s pursuit of the state’s governorship.

The lawmakers on Monday approved the findings of a panel tasked with looking into claims of misbehavior by Shaibu, marking a significant turning point in the history of the South-South state.

Shaibu criticized the parliamentarians as soon as he was fired and said that his impeachment would endanger the nation’s democracy.
