Federal Government Unveils Productivity-Based Wage System for Civil Service

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a new wage system in the civil service based on employees’ productivity, marking a significant departure from the traditional uniform salary structure.

The Director-General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC), Nasir Raji-Mustapha, revealed this during a meeting with Labour correspondents, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of productivity and meritocracy in the public sector.

Under the proposed system, workers on the same level could earn varying salaries based on their productivity levels, thereby incentivizing performance and efficiency. Raji-Mustapha emphasized that productivity is a critical determinant of economic growth and that rewarding productive employees is essential for driving national development.

The initiative, which has been in development for several years, involves extensive collaboration with organized labour and other stakeholders to ensure inclusivity and transparency in the implementation process. Raji-Mustapha reiterated the importance of engaging with labour unions and incorporating their input to garner support for the productivity-led wage system.

Highlighting the international dimension of the initiative, Raji-Mustapha underscored the NPC’s collaboration with various international agencies and organizations, including the International Labour Organization and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency. These partnerships aim to enhance the productivity and skills of Nigerian workers to bolster economic performance and competitiveness on a global scale.

Furthermore, Raji-Mustapha outlined the NPC’s efforts in promoting productivity among youth, particularly National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, through advocacy and awareness campaigns. The NPC has revitalized its initiatives in NYSC camps to instill a culture of productivity and excellence among young Nigerians.

In a testament to the government’s commitment to advancing productivity, Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to deliver the keynote address at the National Productivity Summit organized by the NPC in Abuja. The summit serves as a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for enhancing productivity across various sectors and driving sustainable economic growth.
