Court Acquits Ex-Lagos Speaker Ikuforiji Of Money Laundering Charges

The Federal High Court in Lagos has discharged and acquitted Adeyemi Ikuforiji, a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, of 54 counts of money laundering charges.

Ikuforiji was acquitted alongside his former Personal Assistant, Oyebode Atoyebi.

In his ruling, Justice Liman stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) failed to prove its case against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.

This verdict concludes a legal battle that began when the defendants were first arraigned on March 1, 2012, before Justice Okechukwu Okeke on 20 counts related to misappropriation and money laundering.

The charges against Ikuforiji and Atoyebi were initially filed by the EFCC, alleging that the defendants had committed financial crimes during Ikuforiji’s tenure as Speaker.

However, after a thorough examination of the evidence presented, the court found that the prosecution did not sufficiently substantiate its allegations.
