U.S. Court sentences former Honduran President to 45-Year jail term for drug trafficking
Former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez has been convicted to 45 years in prison and given an option of $8 million fine by a US Court for drug trafficking offenses.
Hernandez had previously denied the charges against him and at his sentencing on Wednesday, insisted on his innocence, claiming to be “wrongly and unjustly accused.”
Back in March, a jury in New York had found Hernandez guilty on three counts of drug trafficking charges after a two-week trial in Manhattan federal court.
He was then extradited from Honduras after the U.S. Department of Justice filed three drug-trafficking and firearms related charges against him in 2022.
Prosecutors accused Hernández of conspiring with drug cartels during his tenure as they moved more than 400 tons of cocaine through Honduras toward the United States, adding that the former president received millions of dollars in bribes that he used to fuel his rise in Honduran politics.
Hernández was president of Honduras from 2014 until 2022.
The Justice Department said, during his years in office, Hernández “protected and enriched the drug traffickers in his inner circle,” citing his use of executive power to support extraditions to the U.S. of certain drug traffickers.
Prosecutor added that with his grip on power, Hernández promised drug traffickers who paid him and followed his instructions that they would remain in Honduras.
