The Jigawa Police Command has confirmed attacks by herdsmen on four communities across Birninkudu, Dutse, and Kiyawa Local Government Areas of the state.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by DSP Lawal Adams, the command’s spokesman, eight people were injured in these attacks and have been hospitalized at Dutse General Hospital, the state capital.
Adams disclosed that, ‘Herdsmen, armed with bows and arrows, machetes, and sticks, reportedly invaded Baranda village, resulting in injuries to eight villagers who defended themselves.
The injured were promptly transported to Dutse General Hospital for medical treatment.’
In response to the escalating tensions, Jigawa State Police Commissioner, Ahmed T. Abdullahi, along with Squadron Commander 35PMF Dutse, Area Commander Dutse, and Divisional Police Officers from Dutse and Kiyawa Divisions, visited the affected villages of Kalai, Waza, Baranda, and Katanga in Dutse, Kiyawa, and Birnin Kudu Local Government Areas.
This visit aimed at engaging the communities in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts.
Adams emphasized that the Commissioner of Police conducted meetings with herders and farmers, stressing the importance of cooperation, tolerance, and mutual understanding.
He urged both parties to refrain from vigilantism and encouraged them to report any grievances, including encroachments on cattle routes, to the nearest police station or security agencies for prompt action.
This incident follows a recent ceremony in Kabak village, Kirikasamma Local Government Area, where the Jigawa State Government celebrated the peaceful coexistence and restored confidence between herdsmen and farmers.
