Southern Senators Forum Condemns Borno Suicide Bombing, Calls for United Response to Terrorism

 

Senators from the Southern part of Nigeria, under the aegis of the Southern Senators Forum (SSF), have strongly condemned the suicide bombing attacks that occurred on Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Tashan Mararaba, Gwoza town, Borno State. The heinous incident claimed at least 18 lives and injured numerous others.

In a statement issued in Abuja, SSF expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the victims’ families. The statement, signed by Chairman Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), Secretary General Senator Barinada Mpigi (PDP, Rivers South East), and Publicity Secretary Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC, Cross River South), highlighted the persistent security challenges facing the country.

“The Nigerian Southern Senators Forum strongly condemns the heinous suicide bombing attacks that took place in Tashan Mararaba, Gwoza town, Borno State on Saturday, June 29, 2024, which claimed the lives of at least 18 persons and injured numerous others. We are deeply shocked and saddened by the barbaric attack, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire community affected by this senseless act of violence,” the statement read.

The Forum emphasized the need for a collective and robust response to terrorism in Nigeria. “These heinous acts of terrorism are a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges facing our nation. The despicable act once again highlights the urgent need for a collective, collaborative, and robust response to terrorism in our country. We call upon the federal government and all security agencies to intensify their efforts in combating terrorism and ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians. Those responsible for this atrocity must be swiftly brought to justice.”

The SSF commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift condemnation of the attacks and his administration’s resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice while ensuring the continued safety of citizens.

The Forum also extended its deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to work with all stakeholders to achieve lasting peace and security across Nigeria. The Forum stands in solidarity with the Northern Senators Forum and with the government and people of Borno State in this time of grief.”

Praising the resilience and bravery of the affected community and the sacrifice of security forces, the SSF called on all Nigerians to support security agencies in their efforts to protect the nation. “We commend the resilience and bravery of the people and the sacrifice of our security forces who continue to fight against these evil forces to protect our country. We call on all Nigerians to remain vigilant and support our security agencies in their efforts to protect our nation.”

The Forum assured continued support for Senate measures aimed at providing better support, equipment, and welfare for security personnel to enhance their effectiveness in the fight against terrorism. “Together, we will overcome this challenge and build a safer, more peaceful Nigeria.”
