The Lagos State Government has taken swift action against residents caught disposing of trash in floodwater within the Ijesha community, located in the Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area. This development was disclosed by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, on Wednesday.
The issue came to light through a photo shared on social media, showing a man and a woman rolling a trash drum in flooded waters on their street. The post, shared by user #Adetutuadeoye3, accused the individuals of dumping waste directly into the floodwater at No. 2 Akewukewe Street beside Ikate Local Government in Ijesha Surulere.
In response, Commissioner Wahab expressed gratitude for the report and promptly directed relevant authorities to address the matter. He specifically tagged @muyiwag and @lawma_gov on social media, urging them to take immediate action.
Updating on the government’s response, Wahab confirmed that the building where the improper waste disposal occurred had been identified and promptly secured by the Environmental Health Service Department of Itire-Ikate LCDA.
“The house has been identified and locked immediately by the Environmental Health Service Department of Itire-Ikate LCDA,” Wahab stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring public health and safety.
This proactive approach underscores the state government’s efforts to curb irresponsible waste disposal practices, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding. Residents are reminded of their role in maintaining cleanliness and preventing environmental hazards by responsibly managing waste disposal.
The Lagos State Government continues to encourage active citizen participation in reporting environmental concerns and pledges to uphold strict enforcement measures to preserve the cleanliness and sustainability of the state.
