In response to the widespread economic hardship affecting Nigeria, members of the House of Representatives have resolved to cut their salaries by 50%. This decision was made during a plenary session on Thursday, following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State.
Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu proposed the amendment, suggesting that legislators should make this significant sacrifice for the next six months. Kalu emphasized the importance of lawmakers leading by example during challenging economic times.
The motion, titled ‘An Appeal to the Proponents of Proposed Nationwide Protest to Maintain Peace, Eschew Violence and Open the Windows for Meaningful Engagements with Government at All Levels in Order to Address their Issues,’ called for patience and dialogue from citizens, especially the youth, who have been planning nationwide protests over the economic situation.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who corrected Kalu on the exact figures, clarified that lawmakers receive ₦600,000 monthly. He expressed optimism that the salary reduction would demonstrate solidarity with Nigerians and encourage peaceful, constructive engagement with the government.
The House’s decision underscores their commitment to addressing the nation’s economic challenges and fostering a collaborative approach to finding solutions.
The motion has been referred to the committees on appropriation, finance, national planning, and humanitarian affairs for further legislative action.
