The Federal Government has set in motion, a National Emergency Operation Centre to coordinate responses and provide timely interventions to victims of Cholera, floods and other disasters across the country.
This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday via the official handle of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
According to a statement by the Director General of NEMA Zubaida Umar, the center convened stakeholders to assess the condition of the flood situation and improve reaction and mitigation plans throughout Nigeria.
According to Zubaida, the center would compile and analyze flood incidence data, disseminate information, and offer prompt assistance to impacted communities.
She added that the centre would ensure that emergency responses were as accurate as possible.
The head of NEMA expressed optimism that these actions, along with those of other interested parties, will minimize the effects of floods.
She outlined the agency’s current initiatives to deal with the flood calamity that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NISA) estimate would occur in 2024.
According to her, 20 states and 52 local government areas had already been affected by flooding.
She emphasised the need for public awareness and proper waste management to mitigate the impact of floods.
Umar said the workshop would awaken NEMA to take more proactive measures to save the lives of the citizens and adequately respond in areas that had been affected.
As part of its move, the agency also flagged off distribution of relief materials to tanker fire disaster victims in Ometan Community, Delta State.
