FG committed to tackling power generation, distribution woes- House committee

Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Power have confirmed that the federal government is committed to tackling the issues related to power generation and distribution in the country.

This was disclosed in Calabar on Wednesday when the committee visited the Calabar Power Generation Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, as part of their constitutional responsibilities and functions.

Chairman of the House Committee, Victor Nwokolo, who represents Ika South and Ika North Federal Constituency in Delta State in the National Assembly, stated that President Bola Tinubu views the power issues in the country as critical.

Nwokolo explained that this is why the Minister of Power and the House Committee on Power are actively touring power infrastructure across the country to address any challenges impeding power supply.

He cautioned against the vandalism of power infrastructure, as this negatively impacts the power supply, and emphasised that the federal government places high importance on making power available to all Nigerians.

“You should know that the issue of power has a significant impact on the nation. Once we are able to fix it, we will have addressed almost half of the country’s problems,” he said.

Managing Director of the Calabar Power Generation Company, Chiedu Ugbo, noted that out of the ten power plants, the Calabar facility is the only one with a steady gas supply, which has enabled consistent power generation over the last 15 years.

He added that out of the five power turbines with an overall site capacity of 625MW, two are currently undergoing turnaround maintenance.
