Gunmen bomb police headquarters, kill corporal in Anambra

Some gunmen have launched a violent attack on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and the Oba Civic Centre in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The assailants, who were heavily armed, threw explosives and petrol bombs at the police facility, causing significant damage and fires in the early hours of Tuesday.

A police corporal was killed in the attack, and several others sustained injuries of varying degrees. The motive behind the assault is still unclear, but it is suspected that the attackers were part of a secessionist group.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers fired sporadically and used petrol bombs, which ignited fires in several offices and the civic centre.

In response, a joint security force, including the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies, has been deployed to Oba and its surroundings to address the situation.

The Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam condemned the attack, characterizing it as an assault on the nation’s security. He pledged to ensure that those responsible for the violence are apprehended and brought to justice.
