The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing and restoring the right-of-way for all drainage channels in the state. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab during an on-the-spot assessment of drainage channels on Wednesday.
Wahab emphasized the government’s determination to rectify environmental infractions that have altered the landscape, noting that contracts have been awarded for restoration projects in critical areas. Specifically, the restoration work will focus on locations such as Ishashi and Oke-Odan, where unauthorized construction has obstructed drainage channels. These areas have been plagued by flooding due to such encroachments.
The Commissioner indicated that enforcement actions are set to commence on Thursday, September 5, following the expiration of contravention notices issued to those who have built on canal paths, particularly along the System 40 drainage channel in Ojo Local Government Area. Wahab stated that the enforcement will aim to restore the required seven-meter drainage setback on all channels, with a 15-meter setback mandated for the Alaba International Market outfall. He noted, however, that local House of Assembly member Mr. Olusegun Ege, who joined the inspection, advocated for a reduced setback of less than 10 meters.
Wahab stressed that the government will not relent in its efforts, underscoring the importance of restoring drainage setbacks to prevent further flooding and to ensure effective management of public infrastructure. He pointed out that the development of Lagos is a deliberate process requiring consistent enforcement and proper planning.
Additionally, the Commissioner highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts in sensitization and advocacy, reiterating that enforcement will continue where necessary. He urged developers and homeowners across Lagos to avoid encroaching on drainage infrastructure, warning that the government will eventually address any violations.
Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, expressed regret over the actions of some developers and business owners who have converted right-of-way areas into property, thereby exposing others to flood risks. He called for public support in the government’s mission to make Lagos a safer, cleaner, and flood-free city.
The President-General of Alaba International Market, Nnamdi Amajioyi, acknowledged the challenges faced during rainy periods and expressed hope that adherence to the proposed measures would alleviate flooding issues. He assured that the market executives would cooperate with state officials to find a lasting solution.
The assessment tour, which included visits to various critical drainage channels such as the Isheri/Aiyetoro/Ologe Primary Channel, Ojo Town, Alaba Rago Primary Channel, and the Ojo Local Government Area, was accompanied by key figures including the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services, Mahamood Adegbite, and other officials.
