IGP orders FCID to take over probe of Kwara student’s killing by policemen

The inspector-general of police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the homicide section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Abuja to commence a detailed and comprehensive investigation into the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Kwara State who was allegedly killed on September 4, 2024 around Sango area in Ilorin, the state’s capital.

Disclosing this in a statement on Monday, Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said officers involved in the incident had been identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, attached to the Department of Operations, Kwara State Police Command and they have been consequently detained for investigation.

According to him, “the inspector-general of police, who is deeply saddened by this unfortunate event that has led to the loss of a young Nigerian, expresses his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

“He acknowledges the profound grief and loss caused by this unfortunate act and reassures the family and members of the public that Justice will be served.”

In an earlier statement, signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Halimat Garba, the Rector of the institution, Abdul Muhammed said, “The circumstances around the young and promising student’s death is still dicey as there were many unconfirmed stories and narrative around it.”

He said that the institution’s management is committed to ensuring that justice is served as appropriate based on the final reports of the matter.

Muhammed appreciated the students for being calm and not taking laws into their hands, stressing that, “as the investigation unfolds, the Polytechnic community remains resolute in its demand for accountability and justice for Abdulqoyyum.”
