Nigerians Convicted Of Corruption Should Not Benefit From State Pardon – Fagbemi

The Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has proposed that individuals convicted of corruption should be ineligible for state pardon.

Speaking at a roundtable organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for state commissioners for justice in Abuja on Monday, Fagbemi suggested that, during the next constitutional review, a provision be included to prevent those found guilty of corruption from benefiting from the prerogative of mercy.

“I will recommend in our next constitutional review exercise that those convicted of corruption be excluded from receiving any form of state pardon,” said Fagbemi, who is also the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). This proposal aims to serve as a deterrent against corruption.

Fagbemi emphasized the need for collaboration among all stakeholders, particularly attorneys-general, in the fight against corruption. He urged them to avoid letting nepotism, political favoritism, rivalry, or bigotry influence their actions in efforts to appease their governors.

He also addressed anti-graft agencies, stressing the importance of thorough investigations before making arrests to prevent media trials. “We should not succumb to public sentiment. In Nigeria, we are divided along political lines. Let us be meticulous and patient before inviting someone for questioning. Avoid rushing to claim a high-profile arrest. You will eventually catch significant offenders,” Fagbemi advised.

The Attorney General of the Federation reaffirmed his stance from last month, stating that he is prepared to take action against any government agency involved in corrupt practices. He encouraged lawyers and the public to report any such information to ensure it is investigated and appropriate measures are taken.
