Speaker Abbas and VP Shettima Collaborate on Solutions for Borno and Other States

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has met with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to discuss the catastrophic flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State. This crucial meeting aimed to express condolences and explore immediate intervention strategies for those affected by the disaster.

President Bola Tinubu, upon receiving reports of the flooding described as the worst in recent decades directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to mobilize assistance for the victims. The flooding, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has displaced thousands and severely impacted essential facilities such as the Post Office and Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

In his statement following the meeting on Wednesday, Speaker Abbas expressed his sympathy to Vice President Shettima, who hails from Borno State.

Abbas outlined the plans developed by the National Assembly and the Presidency to provide relief to the flood victims. He highlighted a significant intervention fund of N3 billion, assuring that the distribution of aid would be managed with transparency and fairness, particularly under the guidance of Governor Babagana Zulum.

Beyond addressing the immediate needs of Borno State, Abbas also mentioned that similar measures are being considered for other flood-prone areas, including Kaduna and Niger states. He emphasized ongoing efforts to provide palliatives and collaborate with state governments to mitigate the impact of flooding across the nation.
