The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that the number of Nigerians holding National Identification Numbers (NINs) has surged to 110 million, marking a 2.39% increase from the 107.34 million reported at the end of May 2024.
The new figures were revealed by NIMC’s Director General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, at an event in Abuja celebrating the sixth edition of the National Day of Identity.
This year’s theme, “Digital Public Infrastructure: Enabling Access to Services,” underscored the significance of digital identity in Nigeria’s economic development.
Coker-Odusote highlighted the transformative impact of digital public infrastructure (DPI) in connecting citizens to essential services such as social welfare, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion. She emphasized that NIMC’s efforts in managing the National Identification Number system are pivotal in establishing a robust framework for these services.
“The role of DPI has become indispensable to Nigeria’s economic development,” Coker-Odusote said. “It provides a foundation for integrating data exchange and payment systems, enhancing the effectiveness and adoption of digital services.”
The Director General also praised the Student Loan Initiative as a prime example of how DPI can overcome financial barriers to education. The initiative, which has engaged with 257 institutions, registered 332,715 students for loans, and disbursed funds to over 18,000 students, showcases the practical benefits of a well-implemented digital infrastructure.
Moreover, Coker-Odusote noted the successful collaboration between NIMC, government agencies, and private sector players. Efforts include linking NINs with phone numbers through telecommunications companies and harmonizing NINs with Bank Verification Numbers to facilitate digital payments and processes.
Coker-Odusote concluded with optimism about the ongoing advancements: “We are on the right path, and significant progress has been made through our partnerships and strategic initiatives. The integration of digital identity and other elements of DPI is set to further drive Nigeria’s development and innovation.”
