Afrexim, NPA, Navy, Others Endorse Bakassi Deep Seaport Project

In a significant step forward for the Bakassi Deep Seaport project in Cross River State, key stakeholders have formally committed to supporting and overseeing the initiative. Prominent organizations, including the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afrexim), Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms (ARISE IIP), the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Customs, the Nigerian Shippers Council, the Director General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, and local community leaders, pledged their dedication in the presence of Governor Bassey Otu and other officials.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Otu reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to the project, which operates under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. He described the Bakassi Deep Seaport as a “bold and courageous statement of collective aspiration” for the people of Cross River, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing the state’s economic prosperity.

“The realization of this project is a top priority for my administration,” he declared, emphasizing the importance of transparency and stakeholder engagement. The ceremony was designed to facilitate dialogue among key entities, including regulators, security agencies, investors, community leaders, and civil society organizations.

A key moment was the signing of the Statement of Endorsement, officially recognizing stakeholders as Bakassi Deep Seaport Brand Ambassadors, which solidifies their united support for the project. Governor Otu expressed confidence that this collaboration would overcome challenges and advance the project toward completion.

Seen as a transformative initiative for Cross River State, the Bakassi Deep Seaport is expected to significantly boost trade and economic activities in the region, generating employment and fostering new business opportunities. “We are ready to work with all stakeholders to make this project a reality. You can count on my unwavering support,” the Governor assured.

The Obong of Calabar, represented by Etubom Architect Bassey Eyo Ndem, also expressed support for the project. Other dignitaries, including the Vice President of Afrexim Bank, Zitto Alfayo, the Vice President of ARISE IIP, Suren Abeywickrema, and representatives from various agencies, conveyed their backing.

Notable attendees included the State Deputy Governor, Peter Odey, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, and Senators from Cross River’s South and Central districts, along with House of Representatives members. The event was widely praised as a crucial advancement for the project, with stakeholders expressing confidence in the state government’s ability to fulfill its commitments.
