IGP Restricts Movement Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has announced a restriction of movement in Edo State in preparation for the governorship election set for Saturday, September 21, 2024.

This directive aims to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process.

In a statement from police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, all vehicular movement will be restricted from 6 AM to 6 PM on election day. Essential services such as accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders are exempt from this order.

To maintain the integrity of the electoral process, the IGP has banned security aides and escorts for VIPs at polling booths and collation centers. Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security outfits are also prohibited from operating during the election, with strict measures against the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles.

Special attention will be given to vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and the elderly, ensuring accessibility at polling stations.

Egbetokun has urged citizens to report any suspicious activities that could disrupt the election and emphasized adherence to these directives to avoid interference. Political parties and their supporters are encouraged to comply with electoral laws, with violations being met with strict consequences.

For emergencies, the IGP reminded residents not to prank call the police emergency lines, advising that text messages would be more effective. Designated numbers for inquiries and reports have been provided, ensuring effective communication during the election.

The police are committed to fostering a safe and democratic environment, reinforcing their dedication to a fair electoral process in Edo State.
