Security operatives executed a strict no-movement order issued by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as the Edo State governorship election began on Saturday morning. A combined team of Nigeria Police and Nigerian Army personnel were visible across major streets in Benin, ensuring compliance with the directive.
Along Ekhewan Road, security forces turned back numerous vehicles, subjecting those carrying journalists to thorough inspections before granting passage. Key routes including the Ringroad, Sakponba Road, and Ihama Road were blocked, particularly in areas designated for voting.
Many residents were seen trekking to their polling units but were intercepted by security personnel who sought to verify their intentions.
Adesuwa, a local resident, acknowledged the heightened security presence, noting its importance in preventing potential disruptions by hoodlums. “It’s good to see that measures are in place to keep the peace,” she remarked.
As the day unfolded, the emphasis on security underscored the authorities’ commitment to a safe electoral process in Edo State.
