President Tinubu Congratulates Monday Okpebholo on Edo Governorship Victory

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his recent victory in the Edo State governorship election.

Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who came in third with 22,763 votes. Fourteen other candidates participated but received fewer votes than the leading trio.

In a statement released on Sunday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged Okpebholo “not to gloat over his victory but to see it as a challenging call to service.” He encouraged the new governor to demonstrate magnanimity by reaching out to political rivals and fostering unity among the people of Edo State to ensure the region’s development.

Tinubu also commended the other candidates for their contributions to advancing Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing that peaceful political contests like the recent election reflect Nigeria’s stability as a democratic nation. He urged those dissatisfied with the election results to pursue redress through legal channels.

“I commend INEC and our security agencies for working tirelessly to conduct a successful, peaceful, and largely hitch-free exercise,” the President stated. “INEC has once again demonstrated its commitment to organizing free and fair elections in our country.”
