NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms Nationwide from Monday to Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced a forecast of thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday, urging residents to take precautions due to the potential for urban flooding.

According to the weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, thunderstorms are expected to begin on Monday, particularly over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Borno states. Later in the day, thunderstorms will also affect Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.

In the morning hours, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states can expect thunderstorms, with isolated storms forecasted for the afternoon and evening across Kwara, the FCT, Niger, Benue, and Kogi states.

The agency anticipates morning rains in the southwest, particularly in Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun, extending to coastal states like Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. Thunderstorms are also expected later in the day over parts of Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, and Lagos, among others.

On Tuesday, isolated thunderstorms are projected for parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, and Zamfara in the morning, followed by thunderstorms in Borno, Yobe, and Gombe later in the day.

By Wednesday, morning thunderstorms will affect Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi, with further isolated storms expected over parts of Yobe, Kaduna, and Kano.

NiMet has cautioned residents to avoid flood-prone areas, as heavy downpours could lead to urban flooding in major cities. Strong winds may also precede the thunderstorms, prompting additional safety measures.

The agency advises the public to heed safety advisories from relevant authorities and urges airline operators to consult updated weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.
