Air Strikes in Khartoum as Sudan Army Attacks Paramilitary Positions

Air strikes and shelling have rocked Khartoum as the army attacked paramilitary positions throughout the Sudanese capital. The clashes began at dawn, several residents reported, in what appeared to be the army’s first major offensive in months to regain parts of the capital controlled by its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

It aligns with Sudan being a major topic of discussion at this week’s UN headquarters in New York.

According to the UN, army head Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan received a message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “about the escalation of the conflict in the Sudan” during the negotiations.

“Waging fierce fighting against the rebel militia inside Khartoum” was what the Sudanese armed forces were doing.

The army had crossed three important bridges over the Nile River, separating its portion of the capital under RSF control from the army-held areas, according to sources who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity since they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Burhan’s Sudanese Armed Forces and his former subordinate, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, have been at war since April 2023.
