Kano Govt Secures N177.4bn Loan for Tamburawa Waterworks Project

The Kano State Government has secured a N177.4 billion loan from the French Development Agency (AFD) to construct new waterworks at Tamburawa and enhance water distribution across Greater Kano.

The project is part of a broader effort to improve access to potable water in response to the state’s fast-growing population.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, accompanied by Commissioner for Water Resources Ali Haruna Makoda, spoke during a two-day project coordination and review workshop in Kano. He emphasized the importance of the project.

“This project will significantly enhance Kano’s water supply, which is essential given our city’s fast growing population. We are optimistic that this project will be finished in the next two years, having overcome the delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and other unanticipated difficulties, stated Governor Yusuf.

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is providing guarantees for the project, which is being carried out under the National Urban Water Reform Project.

Garba Ahmad Bichi, the managing director of the Kano State Water Board, provided further details regarding the scope of the development. “The additional waterworks will significantly address Kano’s water shortages, particularly as the city continues to experience rapid population growth,” Bichi stated. “This project will not only enhance our water infrastructure but also provide sustainable solutions for the future.”

Representatives from the states of Plateau, Enugu, and Ondo attended the session, demonstrating the interest in enhancing urban water reforms and water distribution across the country.

Many Kano residents are optimistic that this project would be a turning point because they have long struggled with an inadequate water supply. It is anticipated that the Tamburawa waterworks will guarantee millions of Kano residents have access to clean water and much-needed respite.
