NPFL: Remo beat Rangers to maintain lead

Table toppers Remo Stars and the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions Rangers International, both conceded for the first time in the league this season but it was the Sky Blue Stars who reigned supreme with a 2-1 win during their matchday four clash in Ikenne on Sunday,

After a goalless and cagey first half, Alex Oyowah combined well with Franck Mawuema to break the deadlock for Remo in the 51st minute but that lead only lasted four minutes as the visitors levelled matters through Kenechukwu Agu’s 55th penalty after goalkeeper Serge Obassa brought down a Rangers player.

Oyowah was the provider as Remo regained their lead on the hour mark courtesy of Tochukwu Michael’s belter which ultimately secured their fourth consecutive win and 100 per cent record at the top of the table with 12 points.

Meanwhile, the clash of the master and the apprentice between Finidi George and Yemi Olanrewaju ended in a 2-0 win for the former as Rivers United swept aside former champions Enyimba at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Ubong Friday and Seiyefa Jakson’s goals in each half of the game secured all the points for the ex-international in his first meeting with his former employers.

Friday, a former NPFL title winner with Akwa United blasted home with a beautiful volley inside the box to give Rivers United the lead inside 17 minutes before Jackson came off the bench to double the lead with three minutes left on the clock to power Rivers United to the second place in the table with 10 points after four games.

Elsewhere, Abia Warriors got their first win of the season under Imama Amapakabo by beating Kano Pillars 2-0 in Umuahia.

In Katsina, Azeez Falolu scored one and assisted another as Katsina United thrashed Lobi Stars 3-0 at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.

The midfielder scored from the spot in the 22nd minute and also set up Taofeek Ahmed for the Chanji Boys’ third in the 81st minute after Nazifi Yahaya had doubled the lead immediately after the restart.

Reigning President Federation Cup champions, El-Kanemi Warriors also played their first game at home this season but they had to come from two goals down to salvage a point against Plateau United.
