Edo State Government Accuses Philip Shaibu of Plans to Invade Government House Amid Reinstatement Controversy

The Edo State Government has alleged that former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu is planning to invade the Edo State Government House on Monday to enforce his reinstatement.

This claim was made by the Special Adviser to the state government Crusoe Osagie, who urged the Inspector General of Police and concerned citizens to intervene and prevent what he described as a “devious plot” that could lead to chaos. He recalled that a previous attempt by Shaibu resulted in the tragic death of a police officer.

Osagie stated, “We want to draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police to the intelligence we have gathered regarding a planned move by Comrade Philip Shaibu to forcefully enter the Edo State Government House to enforce the ruling of Justice J. K. Omotosho.” He noted that a stay of execution is pending at the Court of Appeal and emphasized the need to maintain public order.

The statement added that government lawyers have communicated with the Inspector General and other stakeholders, urging that all actions related to the enforcement of the judgment be stayed until the appeal is resolved. Osagie stressed that allowing Shaibu to act could lead to a breakdown of law and order in Benin City and Edo State.

In response, Shaibu’s Chief Press Secretary, Musa Ebomhiana, categorically denied the allegations, labeling them as “propaganda and cheap blackmail.” He criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for failing to accept the defeat of his candidate in the recent governorship election and suggested that the government should focus on constructive dialogue instead of resorting to unfounded accusations.

As tensions rise, both parties appear to be on a collision course, with Shaibu maintaining that there is no basis for the government’s claims.

The situation remains fluid, and the involvement of law enforcement may be crucial in ensuring public safety in the days ahead.
