Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
During the general debate, Shettima delivered Nigeria’s national statement, highlighting the need for comprehensive debt relief measures to support sustainable development.
In his remarks, Shettima emphasized that “countries of the global South cannot make meaningful economic progress without special concessions and a review of their current debt burden.” This call for debt forgiveness underscores Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with external debts.
According to Shettima’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice-President also engaged in several bilateral meetings and participated in various sideline events during the assembly.
Following his return, Shettima will join President Tinubu in commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary with planned activities.
