Biden Approves $567 Million in Defense Support for Taiwan

United States President Joe Biden has approved a new defense package for Taiwan, totaling $567 million, as confirmed by the White House on Sunday.

The statement indicated that Biden has delegated authority to the Secretary of State to facilitate the drawdown of these funds for defense articles, services, and military education and training aimed at assisting Taiwan.

Despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the U.S. remains its most significant international ally and arms supplier.

This move comes amid ongoing tensions with China, which has consistently demanded that Washington cease its military support for Taipei, viewing Taiwan as part of its territory.

In April, the U.S. had already authorized billions in military aid for Taiwan in response to increasing military pressure from China. Beijing has accused the U.S. of interfering in its internal affairs, particularly through its support of the democratic island. Taiwan has voiced concerns about delays in receiving U.S. arms, including upgraded F-14 fighter jets.

China has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over Taiwan, and has intensified its rhetoric surrounding “unification” as an inevitable outcome. Taiwan, on the other hand, firmly rejects China’s claims, advocating for the right of its people to determine their own future.
