Senate Advances Bill for South South Development Commission

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill aimed at establishing the South South Development Commission, marking a significant step towards addressing the region’s unique needs.

The bill, which passed its second reading on Thursday, was championed by Senator representing Cross River South Ekpenyong Asuquo.

Asuquo emphasized the necessity of a dedicated commission for the South South, arguing that the existing Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) encompasses states beyond the geopolitical zone, thereby diluting its focus on local issues.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin supported the bill, asserting that each geopolitical zone should have its own commission. He highlighted the need for a distinct representation, noting, “What is good for the goose is good for the gander.” Jibrin suggested that if the bill passes, there may be a need to rename the NDDC to reflect its broader jurisdiction over oil-producing states.

Senator Sunday Karimi from Kogi West reinforced the argument, stressing the importance of the South South region, which is pivotal to Nigeria’s oil production and economic stability. “The South-South works on the altar and they must be fed at the altar,” he declared, voicing strong support for the bill.

Following a successful voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the bill was referred to the committee on special duties for further consideration, with a report expected within a week.

Additionally, the Senate made amendments to the North West and South East Development Commission bills to ensure geopolitical representation in their governing boards, reflecting a growing emphasis on tailored regional development in Nigeria.
