House of Representatives Advances Bill to Establish Road Safety Special Armed Squad

A Bill aimed at amending the Federal Road Safety Commission Act of 2007 has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by lawmakers Abiodun Adesida and Olaide Muhammed, the bill proposes the creation of a Road Safety Special Armed Squad and seeks to grant Deputy Corps Marshals benefits associated with that rank, including retirement provisions.

The legislation is designed to enhance the Federal Road Safety Corps’ responsibilities in road traffic administration and safety management, with a focus on preventing and minimizing road traffic crashes on public roads. Notably, the bill moved through the second reading without any debate and will now proceed to a public hearing for further consideration.

In a separate matter, the House of Representatives has reviewed the Committee on Public Accounts’ report regarding the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 intervention funds disbursed to various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) between 2020 and 2022.

In light of this, the House has requested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) provide detailed information on funds recovered from the MDAs related to the COVID-19 interventions.

Additionally, the House has called on the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to submit evidence of remittances and the status of unspent funds from the COVID-19 intervention programs across the various ministries and agencies.
