Minister of State for Petroleum Directs Investigation into Jigawa Tanker Explosion

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri, has instructed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Lokpobiri emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety standards in the transportation of petroleum products, highlighting the recent discussions he had with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Corps Marshal about safety measures.

“This incident underscores the urgency of that collaboration,” he stated, confirming his directive for a thorough investigation into the unfortunate event. He also urged the public to refrain from approaching petroleum-laden tankers involved in accidents due to the potentially fatal risks.

Lokpobiri called upon petroleum tanker drivers and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to work closely with both the FRSC and NMDPRA to ensure that only certified and licensed drivers are permitted to transport petroleum products.

Expressing his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries caused by the explosion, Lokpobiri said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, which claimed many lives, destroyed properties, and left several others injured.” He extended his thoughts and prayers to the families of those affected and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.

On Tuesday, the Jigawa police command confirmed that 90 fatalities resulted from the explosion on the Kano-Hadejia expressway, with 50 others injured, most of whom were attempting to scoop petrol from the overturned tanker.
