Okpebholo Urges Banks to Halt Loans Amid Allegations of Looting by Outgoing Administration

Edo State Governor-Elect, Monday Okpebholo, has called on banks to suspend the granting of loans to the state government during the transition period, expressing serious concerns over alleged looting of government funds and properties by officials of the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Godswill Inegbe, Okpebholo urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate these claims thoroughly. He noted the disturbing reports of widespread looting occurring just weeks before the official handover, scheduled for November 12.

“We are deeply troubled by the ongoing allegations of looting of government funds and properties from the Government House in Benin City,” the statement read. “It is concerning that, despite the impending transition, the outgoing administration is reportedly obtaining loans from banks under questionable circumstances.”

Okpebholo highlighted specific instances of looting, including vehicles, furniture, and other valuables from government offices and residences, emphasizing that such actions undermine public trust in elected officials. He called on relevant authorities to ensure accountability and protect government properties from vandalism.

Additionally, Okpebholo cautioned banks and financial institutions against engaging in dealings that could jeopardize the state’s finances, particularly during this critical transition phase. He advised the Accountant General of Edo State to maintain integrity in his duties, stating that this commitment would uphold the state’s financial reputation.

In response, Commissioner for Orientation and Information Chris Nehikhare dismissed Okpebholo’s allegations as baseless and spurious. He urged the Governor-Elect’s associates to wait until the official handover date to begin governance, asserting that there cannot be two governors in Edo State at the same time.

As the political tension heightens ahead of the transition, both sides remain firm in their positions, setting the stage for a contentious handover process.
