The Nigerian Police Force has reported a significant crackdown on vehicle theft, flagging 612 hijacked and missing vehicles across the country within the past month.
In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, credited the success to the deployment of the Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR).
Following these findings, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered an immediate investigation to dismantle the syndicate behind these vehicle hijackings.
During a news conference in Abuja, Adejobi highlighted that the first batch of seven stolen vehicles flagged through the E-CMR platform is currently under investigation, with three of those already recovered.
He underscored the E-CMR initiative’s effectiveness, which aims to significantly reduce vehicle theft and related crimes. One notable case involved a vehicle stolen from Abuja that was traced to Ilorin, Kwara State and successfully returned to its rightful owner last weekend.
