Justice Mary Anenih of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has authorized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to present two witnesses virtually in the trial of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.
In a ruling on Friday, Justice Anenih granted the EFCC’s application, permitting the prosecution to field the witnesses currently residing abroad through video link.
Emefiele faces a six-count charge related to the unlawful printing of new naira notes, among other offenses.
During the proceedings, the EFCC counsel informed the court that the witnesses, based in the United States, posed logistical challenges for in-person attendance. Consequently, the prosecution sought to have their oral evidence taken via platforms like Zoom.
The defense counsel expressed no objection to the application but requested clarification on whether these witnesses would be the final ones called by the prosecution.
After considering both sides, Justice Anenih granted the request and adjourned the trial to November 14,26, December 4, 2024, and January 21, 2025.
