The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has announced the groundbreaking of 40 Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Abuja, aimed at improving the welfare of judicial officers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at the ceremony, she emphasized that these residences will significantly enhance judges’ performance by providing a supportive living environment.
Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted that a conducive home life is vital for judges to focus on their responsibilities, stating, “Judicial officers require peace of mind, security, and comfort in their residences to fully dedicate themselves to the rigorous task of interpreting and applying the law.” She asserted that the mental well-being of judicial officers is closely linked to their living conditions, and the new quarters will foster a secure and tranquil environment for them to carry out their duties effectively.
The event was attended by dignitaries including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem. Wike underscored the importance of a robust welfare package for judicial officers, noting that housing security would empower judges to deliver fair and courageous judgments.
He revealed that 70% of the project’s funding had already been released following approval from the Federal Executive Council last month.
The construction will provide 20 units for the FCT High Court, 10 for the Federal High Court, and 10 for the Court of Appeal, further supporting the judiciary’s operational capacity in the region.
