PDP Demands Investigation into Alleged Shoddy Multi-Billion Naira Road Project in Kebbi

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State has called on Governor Nasir Idris, to investigate the alleged substandard execution of the multi-billion naira Yauri township roads project.

The PDP expressed concern over reports that sections of the roads are already deteriorating, just a few months after construction.

In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi, the PDP State Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa-Kalgo, expressed the party’s disappointment with the project’s quality, describing it as “shoddy” and “distasteful.”

“PDP is appalled by the execution of the ongoing multi-billion naira Yauri township roads project. It is most unfortunate that several reports from Yauri confirm some roads are already caving in and breaking apart due to poor workmanship by the contractors,” Bawa-Kalgo said.

The PDP urged the State Ministry of Works to take responsibility for what it termed a “glaring contractual breach” and called for immediate corrective action to prevent further damage and financial loss to the state. The party emphasized that such crucial projects, which directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens, should not be compromised.

Bawa-Kalgo also called on Governor Idris to hold officials accountable for any lapses in supervision, noting that such a stance would deter future misconduct and ensure that the state’s scarce resources are not wasted on substandard projects.

In response, the Kebbi State Government dismissed the PDP’s allegations. In a press release signed by Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the government described the claims as baseless and without merit. It emphasized that all projects in the state are overseen by competent engineers from the State Ministry of Works, who are “tested and trusted” to deliver quality work.

The government criticised the PDP for failing to directly address the contractors responsible for the project, instead making broad accusations about the quality of the work. The statement urged the PDP to focus on constructive criticism rather than engaging in what it termed “destructive criticism.”

The Kebbi State Government reiterated its commitment to delivering on its promises and called on the people of the state to continue supporting its development efforts.
