
A joint meeting of the Northern Governors Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council is currently taking place in Kaduna, addressing the region’s urgent security and developmental challenges.
Convened at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, the meeting has drawn the attention of notable figures, including Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, opened the meeting by highlighting the pressing issues that plague the region, such as insecurity, economic hardship, environmental degradation, and youth restiveness. He called for a unified response, emphasizing that the collective resolve of northern leaders is being tested by these ongoing challenges. Yahaya stated that while these issues are significant, the unity and commitment of the region’s leaders remain crucial in overcoming them.
The governor articulated the stark realities facing the North, including terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and the rising tide of poverty and unemployment. He underscored the necessity of collaboration with the Federal Government and relevant agencies to provide support and relief to affected communities. This cooperation is essential not only for immediate responses but also for long-term strategies aimed at sustainable development.
In his remarks, Kaduna Governor and chief host, Uba Sani, echoed the importance of solidarity among northern leaders. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his proactive measures against insecurity, specifically mentioning the establishment of a Joint Military Command and the launch of Operation Fansan Yamma as clear indicators of the Nigerian Government’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges confronting the North. Sani emphasized that the commitment to peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity should guide their collective efforts.
Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Sa’ad Abubakar, also stressed the pivotal role that traditional rulers play in promoting peace and stability in the region. He urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that Northern Nigeria progresses despite its challenges.
