The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) will meet with the Federal Government today (Thursday) at 11 AM to address the ongoing strike.
SSANU Vice-President Abdussobur Salaam confirmed the meeting, stating that the union received an official invitation from the government late Wednesday night. “The meeting will be presided over by the Minister of State for Education and will take place in the Minister’s Conference Room,” he said.
The indefinite strike, which began on Monday, was triggered by four months of unpaid salaries, resulting in a complete shutdown of university activities nationwide.
SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim emphasized that the strike’s impact extends beyond non-academic staff, affecting top university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, who have also not received their salaries.
Ibrahim noted, “It is a long-term battle because this strike also involves senior administrators who were not paid. The impact is significant, and no one from the government has reached out to us. Our members are resolute; they will not return to work until all salaries are paid.” He added that compliance with the strike has been strong, with a reported 98% adherence among members.
The unions are demanding not only the payment of the withheld salaries but also improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
